Freedom in Christ
One of my favorite scriptures says this: So Christ has truly set us free. Now make sure that you stay free, and don't get tied up again in slavery to the law. Galatians 5:1
As our country celebrates its independence this month, I think it's also a great time to reflect on the freedom we as Christians have in Christ. I don't know how you celebrate your freedom in Christ, but I love to celebrate mine through music and would like to invite you to check out these ten praise and worship songs that sing about freedom.
Freedom Reigns by Jason Upton
Taken from the scripture, 'Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom' (2 Corinthians 3:17), this song was written by Canadian songwriter and pastor, Michael Larson. Honestly I have never heard of the guy but I have heard many different artists cover this song including Kim Walker Smith, Hillsong, and Vineyard Music. For anyone who sings worship songs, this song has probably been sung by them. My favorite rendition though, is by Jason Upton, a guy who is from Minneapolis, Minnesota but who currently lives in Wisconsin.
Freedom Lyrics:
Where the spirit of the Lord is
There is freedom
If you're tired and you are thirsty
There is freedom
Freedom reigns in this place
showers of mercy and grace
Falling on ev'ry face
There is freedom...
There is freedom
If you're tired and you are thirsty
There is freedom
Freedom reigns in this place
showers of mercy and grace
Falling on ev'ry face
There is freedom...
I am Free by Newsboys (with Peter Furler)
One of the reasons I enjoy writing about Christian music is because I learn so much. I had no idea the song 'I Am Free' was written by Jon Egan from Desperation Band. The cool thing about this particular band is that they were formed at New Life Church in Colorado Springs, Colorado in 2001 - a church I actually visited in 2002! I don't think the band performed this song at the conference I had attended but I have heard it live in concert by the Newsboys and it is definitely a song that you can't not dance to!
Freedom Lyrics:
Through you the blind will see
Through you the mute will sing
Through you the dead will rise
Through you all hearts will praise
Through you the darkness flees
Through you my heart screams
I am free
Yes, I am free
Through you the mute will sing
Through you the dead will rise
Through you all hearts will praise
Through you the darkness flees
Through you my heart screams
I am free
Yes, I am free
I am free to run
I am free to dance
I am free to live for YouI am free
I am free to dance
I am free to live for YouI am free
WHO THE SON SETS FREE IS FREE INDEED
Set Me Free by Casting Crowns
Written by Bernie Herms and Mark Hall, this song appears on Casting Crowns second album, 'Lifesong.' Even though much of our Christian life is devoted to spiritual warfare, and fighting off the demons that are constantly trying to keep us bound in chains, there aren't a lot of contemporary Christian songs that sing about it so boldly. Even though this song is about a demon-possessed man calling out to Jesus for help, I think a lot of Christians can identify with the piercing lyrics of this song. Though they might not be possessed, Christians still battle the demons of darkness, sometimes every day. Thankfully, for us we have Jesus whose light can overcome the darkness. (The Light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it. John 1:5)
Freedom Lyrics
Set me free of the chains holding me
Is anybody out there hearing me?
Set me free...
Set me free of the chains holding me
Is anybody out there hearing me?
Set me free...
Morning breaks another day
Finds me crying in the rain
All alone with my demons I am
Who is this man that comes my way?
The dark ones shriek
They scream his name
Finds me crying in the rain
All alone with my demons I am
Who is this man that comes my way?
The dark ones shriek
They scream his name
Is this the one they say will set the captives free?
Jesus, rescue me
set the captives free?
Jesus, rescue me
Jesus, rescue me
set the captives free?
Jesus, rescue me
Love Came Down by Kari Jobe
Honestly, I didn't listen to Kari Jobe much when she first came upon the Christian music scene with the release of her first album in 2009. But when Angie Smith sang her song, 'Love Came Down' during the 12th season of American Idol, I realized I had been missing out on some great Christian music. After singing the beautiful rendition and playing the piano along with it, Angie received a standing ovation by the crowd and the judges. It should be noted that while Kari Jobe made the song popular, it was actually written by Brian Johnson.
Freedom Lyrics:
Love came down and rescued me
Love came down and set me free
I am Yours
Lord I'm forever Yours
Mountains high or valley low
I sing out and remind my soul
I am Yours
I am forever Yours
Love came down and set me free
I am Yours
Lord I'm forever Yours
Mountains high or valley low
I sing out and remind my soul
I am Yours
I am forever Yours
He is Faithful by Bryan and Katie Torwalt
This song is one of my and my daughter's all time favorite worship songs. The song was written by Bryan and Katie Torwalt (of Jesus Culture) and appears on their album, Here on Earth. I discovered this song when the worship team from the church I attend began singing it. A couple of years ago, my husband, daughter, and I drove all the way from Bismarck, North Dakota to Toronto, Onatario and we must have listened to this song a hundred times - that is no exaggeration! It's simply an amazing song with powerful lyrics and I know I'll never get tired of hearing it. If you have never heard it, I encourage you to take a listen!
Freedom Lyrics:
And our song it will be
Out of the darkness we will rise and sing
Out of the darkness we will rise and sing
He is faithful, He is glorious
And He is Jesus, all my hope is in Him
He is freedom, He is healing right now
He is hope and joy, love and peace and life
And He is Jesus, all my hope is in Him
He is freedom, He is healing right now
He is hope and joy, love and peace and life
We Cry Freedom by Lindell Cooley
I first heard this song when our worship team began doing it at the church I attend - New Life Bismarck. I loved it right away, especially since it is a great song to dance to! I was surprised when I did some research on the song that it was actually written back in the year 2000 by a guy I had never heard of before - Matthew Bushard. I recently discovered that one of my all-time favorite worship leaders, Lindell Cooley sings a version of the song!
Freedom Lyrics:
I wanna worship a little deeper than before
I wanna love you more than before
I wanna dance more freely than before
I wanna dance more freely than before
I wanna love you more than before
I wanna dance more freely than before
I wanna dance more freely than before
I cry freedom from the chains that bind your children
Freedom from the chains that bind our praise to you
Freedom from the lies of the enemy
Freedom we cry Freedom!
Freedom from the chains that bind our praise to you
Freedom from the lies of the enemy
Freedom we cry Freedom!
Freedom by Bethel Music (live)
While this song contains the same lyrics as the Freedom Reigns song by Jason Upton, it is a more lively, upbeat song that is super fun to dance to during worship! Since discovering Bethel Music, honestly it's probably the music I listen to most often these days. The worship team has such an amazing way of inviting God's presence and I just love when they go into spontaneous worship. If you've never heard any of their music or watched their videos, there are a lot of them on YouTube that I would highly recommend! By the way, this song was written by members of the Bethel worship team: William Matthews, Christa Black Gifford, and Matthew Sparks.
Freedom Lyrics:
You came to set the captives free
You came to bring us liberty
My sin and my rejection
Your blood and my acceptance
Now I'm alive to bring You praise
Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom
Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom
Every chain is broken through You, Jesus
Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom
You came to bring us liberty
My sin and my rejection
Your blood and my acceptance
Now I'm alive to bring You praise
Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom
Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom
Every chain is broken through You, Jesus
Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom
I'm free I'm free, I'm free to dance and sing
I'm free, I'm free, I'm free to shout it out
I'm free, I'm free, I'm free to dance and sing
I'm free, I'm free, I'm free to worship You
I'm gonna worship you
I'm free, I'm free, I'm free to shout it out
I'm free, I'm free, I'm free to dance and sing
I'm free, I'm free, I'm free to worship You
I'm gonna worship you
A New Hallelujah by Michael W Smith
I will never forget seeing Michael W. Smith live for the first time ever at the Bismarck Civic Center. I had been a fan of his for many years before getting the chance to actually go to one of his concerts. The year was 2008 and I had been through somewhat of a difficult time. He had just come out with his album, A New Hallelujah and every song ministered to me in a profound way. I still love that whole album and listen to it on a regular basis. The song A New Hallelujah was co-written by Michael Smith and his wife Debbie, along with worship songwriter, Paul Baloche.
Freedom Lyrics
Can you hear, there's a new song
Breaking out from the children of freedom
Every race and every nation
Sing it out, sing a new Hallelujah
Let us sing love to the nations
Bringing hope of the grace that has freed us
Make it known and make Him famous
Sing it out, sing a new Hallelujah
Breaking out from the children of freedom
Every race and every nation
Sing it out, sing a new Hallelujah
Let us sing love to the nations
Bringing hope of the grace that has freed us
Make it known and make Him famous
Sing it out, sing a new Hallelujah
God's Not Dead by Newsboys (with Michael Tate)
Not only is this the name of a song, it's also the name of the album on which the song appears and there is a movie by the same name! The song (written by Daniel Bashta) is so much fun to jam to but I also love it's bold message. The album is actually the 15th studio album by the Newsboys and the second with lead singer, Michael Tate (formerly of DC Talk). The cool thing is that the song God's Not Dead features Kevin Maxx, who performed with Tate as part of DC Talk. The Newsboys also make an appearance on the movie God's Not Dead.
Freedom Lyrics
Let love explode and bring the dead to life
A love so bold to bring a revolution somehow
Now I'm lost in Your freedom
In this world I'll overcome
My God's not dead
He's surely alive
He's living on the inside
Roaring like a lion
Let love explode and bring the dead to life
A love so bold to bring a revolution somehow
Now I'm lost in Your freedom
In this world I'll overcome
My God's not dead
He's surely alive
He's living on the inside
Roaring like a lion
Amazing Grace (My Chains are Gone) by Chris Tomlin
Whether you are a believer or not, it's pretty much guaranteed you're familiar with the hymn, Amazing Grace written by John Newton and published way back in 1779. It's pretty awesome how lyrics written so many years ago are still so powerful today. In 2007 singer/songwriter, Chris Tomlin was asked to add lyrics to the traditional hymn (which he was reluctant to do at first). The project was for the movie, Amazing Grace which chronicled the life of William Wilberforce who led the way to end slavery in Great Britain. The result of the added lyrics is a beautiful song that speaks of freedom in a very profound way. Louie Giglio also helped write some of the additional lyrics.
Freedom Lyrics:
My chains are gone
I've been set free
My God, my Savior has ransomed me
And like a flood His mercy reigns
Unending love, amazing grace
My chains are gone
I've been set free
My God, my Savior has ransomed me
And like a flood His mercy reigns
Unending love, amazing grace
